The Destination Thailand Visa is a five-year, multiple-entry visa. Each stay is up to 180 days, and Immigration can extend it once by up to 180 days.

From 31 August 2026, a filing in Mexico needs proof of permanent residence in Mexico, plus a criminal-record certificate. A short visit is no longer enough.

Here is the current guide for applicants who permanently reside in Mexico.

What changed

The Destination Thailand Visa started on 15 July 2024. The Cabinet route is the 28 May 2024 decision, the public sheet is 29 May 2024, and the in-force summary is the July 2024 infographic. On 26 August 2026 the Department of Consular Affairs changed the documents. Those documents apply from 00:00 on 31 August 2026, Thailand time. The stay, the fee, and the 500,000 baht test are the same.

MFA new visa measures (announced, not yet in force)29 May 2024

This is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sheet that introduced the Destination Thailand Visa. It says the effective date would follow once the legal steps were finished.

  • The visa fee is 10,000 baht. Validity is 5 years, multiple entry. Each stay is 180 days.
  • Immigration can extend that stay once, for a period not exceeding 180 days.
  • Eligible people are remote workers, digital nomads, and freelancers; people joining activities such as Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sport training, medical treatment, seminars, and music festivals; and spouses and dependent children of DTV holders.
  • The sheet says you need proof of funds or a guarantee of not less than 500,000 baht.

MFA visa measures in force (July 2024 infographic)15 July 2024

The measures took effect on 15 July 2024. This infographic is the public document list from launch. The 31 August 2026 notice replaced one item on that list and added another.

  • Stay is 180 days per entry. The extension at the Immigration Bureau is one time, not exceeding 180 days per entry. After 180 days plus 180 days you leave Thailand and can re-enter on the same DTV while it is still valid.
  • Where to apply: a Royal Thai Embassy, a Royal Thai Consulate-General, or Thai e-Visa.
  • The launch list asked for a passport, a photograph, a document indicating current location, financial evidence of at least 500,000 baht, and proof of the purpose of the visit.
  • Workcation proof was an employment contract or employment certificate in the applicant's country, or a professional portfolio. Soft power proof was confirmation of the activity, or a hospital appointment. A spouse or child needed proof of the relationship.
  • The fee on this sheet is 10,000 baht. A post can collect that in local currency.

  • The document showing your current location is replaced by proof of permanent residence.
  • A criminal-record clearance certificate is added.
  • The e-Visa system was closed from 00:00 on 30 August 2026 and opened again from 00:00 on 31 August 2026, Thailand time.

Current DTV document listThailand e-Visa

This is the live national list. A post can still ask for more. Check that embassy or consulate before you pay.

  • Every category needs the passport biodata page, a photo from the last six months, proof of permanent residence in the country where you submit the application, and a criminal-record certificate from your country of nationality or from the country where you apply.
  • Money is the last three months of bank statements showing at least 500,000 baht, or the equivalent, or a sponsorship letter.
  • Workcation also needs an employment contract or employment certificate in your country, or a professional portfolio.
  • Soft power also needs confirmation that you will attend the activity, or a letter of appointment from a hospital or medical centre.
  • A spouse or child under 20 also needs the holder's DTV and proof of the relationship, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or adoption certificate.
  • The visa is multiple entry and valid for 5 years.

e-Visa page

Koninklijke Thaise Ambassade, Londen8 September 2026

London is one post applying the 31 August 2026 rules. Use it as an example of a checklist, not as the rule for every country.

  • The page still says 180 days per entry, one extension of not more than 180 days, then you leave and can re-enter on the same visa while it is valid.
  • London asks for proof of permanent residence in the UK, Ireland, or the British Overseas Territories, such as indefinite leave to remain or Irish long-term residency. A tourist stamp is not that document.
  • The police certificate must have been issued within 6 months of submission. That six-month limit is London's instruction.
  • London's fee is £300. Financial evidence on this page is bank statements of at least £12,000, which the embassy equates to 500,000 baht.
  • For an extension, London tells you to contact the Immigration Bureau once you are in Thailand.

Embassy page

Koninklijke Thaise Ambassade, Vientiane28 August 2026

Vientiane states the residence rule in plain language: to file there you must be a Lao national or a permanent resident of Laos, and you must file a criminal-record certificate.

  • The new requirements apply worldwide from 31 August 2026.
  • You must be a national or a permanent resident of the country where the application is submitted.
  • The criminal-record certificate comes from the authorities of your country of nationality or of the country where you apply.
  • An application that was submitted and paid before 31 August 2026 is not covered by the new requirements.

DTV extension of stayImmigration Division 1, Bangkok

This is the published checklist for extending a DTV at Immigration Division 1 in Bangkok. Another province can ask for a different set. The extension is not the same thing as the 10,000 baht visa fee.

  • Telework, other activities, and dependents are separate extension cases. You file form TM.7.
  • Telework asks for at least 500,000 baht in a Thai bank, a foreign bank that can be verified, or both, held not less than 30 days before the application, or a guarantee of at least 500,000 baht. It also asks for a contract or work history that is still in effect, proof of where you stay, and copies of TM.47 and TM.30.
  • For Muay Thai, cooking, sport, and other soft-power activities, Division 1 asks for a certificate and an extension request from the relevant government authority. A gym letter alone is not what this page lists. Medical care uses a certificate from a hospital or a government medical institute. Art and music exhibitions on this page use a certificate from TCEB.
  • A spouse or a legitimate child under 20 needs relationship documents, proof of residence, and copies of TM.47 and TM.30. This dependent extension list does not repeat the 500,000 baht test.
  • Other extension types on the same Immigration site publish a TM.7 fee of 1,900 baht. The DTV section itself does not restate a different fee.

Immigration page

DTV Visumcategorieën

Three routes. The document list below is the current e-Visa page. A Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate can ask for more than this. The old checklists on this website asked for six months of salary slips, a company registration legalised by an embassy, and, for a spouse, six months of residence in Thailand. Those items are not on the national list.

Werkvakantie

Digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent, or freelancer. The work is for an employer or clients outside Thailand.

Thai soft power

The July 2024 list names these activities. Foreign talent sits under workcation, not under soft power. At extension, Immigration Division 1 asks soft-power applicants for a certificate from the relevant government authority, not only a letter from a gym or a school.

Documents, on top of the passport, photo, residence proof, funds, and criminal-record certificate:

Spouse and children under 20

A spouse, and children under 20, of a DTV holder. They file their own application. The e-Visa list still asks them for the 500,000 baht test or a sponsorship letter.

Money and documents

500,000 baht is the published figure, from the May 2024 sheet through the current e-Visa page. The live page wants that balance on bank statements for the last 3 months, or a sponsorship letter. Payslips were an example on the July 2024 sheet. They are not a substitute on the current e-Visa wording. A post can still ask to see income.

The current national list does not set a minimum age for the main applicant. A dependent child must be under 20. Some posts have refused a main applicant under 20. Ask the post if that is you. A long overstay is still a reason a post or Immigration can refuse you.

DTV Visumaanvraagkosten

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs fee is 10,000 baht. Embassies and consulates collect it in local currency, so the amount on the payment screen is not always 10,000 baht and it is not a second fee. The fee is not refunded if the application is refused. See the July 2024 infographic.

This page does not have a separate published fee for Mexico. Use the amount on the e-Visa payment screen for that post.

Extension of stay

One extension per entry, not exceeding 180 days, at the Immigration Bureau. Then you leave. You apply on form TM.7. Immigration Division 1 in Bangkok splits the extension into telework, other activities, and dependents, and it can ask again for the 500,000 baht, for proof you are still doing the work or the activity, for TM.30, and for TM.47 if you have already stayed past 90 days.

The same Immigration site publishes 1,900 baht as the TM.7 fee on other extension types. The DTV section does not name a different fee. Approval is a decision by the officer. It is not automatic.

Wat is het Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?

It is a five-year, multiple-entry visa for remote work and for a listed Thai soft-power activity, plus the spouse and children under 20 of a holder. It is not an immigrant visa and it is not a visa to take employment in Thailand. The government description is the PRD note of 17 July 2024.

You get up to 180 days each time you enter. One extension of up to 180 days is possible inside Thailand. You can keep using the visa until the five years end, as long as you still qualify and the passport allows it.

Werken in Thailand met de DTV

Workcation is for work you do remotely for an employer or clients outside Thailand. The PRD note describes the holders as remote workers, digital nomads, and freelancers. It does not say you may work for a Thai employer.

A work permit is issued by the Department of Employment for work in Thailand, normally with a Non-Immigrant B visa. There is no Department of Employment notice that says a DTV replaces that permit. If the work is only for an overseas employer and does not serve a Thai client, that is the case the visa was opened for. If a Thai company is in the arrangement, assume you need a different visa and a work permit, and check before you start.

90-day reporting

If you stay in Thailand longer than 90 days, you notify Immigration on form TM.47. The Bangkok DTV extension list asks for a copy of that notification, and for the TM.30 residence notice. Read the practical notes on 90-day reporting for DTV holders.

Hoe je het Destination Thailand Visa kunt aanvragen

You apply online at Thailand e-Visa, with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate for the country where you permanently reside. You cannot file this visa from inside Thailand. The fee is paid to that post and is not refunded.

This website is not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The test here is a pre-screen. From 31 August 2026 the pre-screen does not replace proof of permanent residence or the criminal-record certificate, and it does not replace the checklist of the post that will decide the file.

Questions

Is the stay still 180 days?

Yes. Each entry is up to 180 days. Immigration can extend that stay once, for not more than 180 days. After 180 days plus 180 days you leave Thailand. You can come back on the same visa while the five years are still running. See the July 2024 infographic and the London embassy page, which was updated on 8 September 2026.

What changed on 31 August 2026?

Two documents. Proof of permanent residence replaced the old document that only showed where you were at the time. A criminal-record certificate was added. The fee, the 500,000 baht test, the 180-day stay, and the five-year visa did not change. An application submitted before 31 August 2026 stays on the old document list. See the Consular Affairs notice.

Can I apply from a country I am only visiting?

The national notice no longer asks for a document of current location. It asks for proof of permanent residence. Vientiane says a filing in Laos must be from a Lao national or a permanent resident of Laos. London asks for settlement in the UK, Ireland, or the British Overseas Territories. A tourist stamp or a short lease is not that document.

Do a spouse and children also need 500,000 baht?

On the current e-Visa list, yes, unless a sponsorship letter covers it. The old line that a dependent could skip the money test is not what the e-Visa page says. The Bangkok extension checklist for dependents does not repeat the 500,000 baht figure. That is the extension, not the visa application.

Is the extension fee 10,000 baht?

No. 10,000 baht is the visa fee in the May 2024 measures. The extension is a separate TM.7 application at Immigration. Other extension types on the Immigration Division 1 site publish a TM.7 fee of 1,900 baht. The DTV section does not publish a different number. This website used to say the extension might cost up to 10,000 baht and was not confirmed. That was not what the MFA sheet says.

Can I work for a Thai company on a DTV?

No. Workcation is remote work for an employer or clients outside Thailand. Soft power is the activity you were accepted for. A job with a Thai employer is a different visa, and it needs a work permit from the Department of Employment.

Does remote work on a DTV need a Thai work permit?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs built this visa for remote work, and the Department of Employment has not published a written exemption from the foreign-work law. Do not treat "no work permit" as a guarantee. If any of the work is for a Thai company or a Thai client, this is the wrong visa.

Can I switch to another visa without leaving Thailand?

The DTV rules published by the MFA do not offer that. After the extended stay you depart and can re-enter on the same DTV while it is valid. See the July 2024 infographic.
